BACH 2012 - The 34th Annual Northwest Bach Festival

SPOKANE - The 34th Annual Northwest Bach Festival presented by Connoisseur Concerts will be held in Spokane February 28 - March 18, 2012, opening on Tuesday, February 28 with a Chamber Music Concert with music of Purcell, Biber, Gabrieli, J.S. Bach and Mozart featuring twenty-three artists (see names on calendar listing). On Saturday, March 3 at 8pm Gunther Schuller will conduct the Bach Festival Orchestra and Chorus in a program of music of J. Christoph Bach, J.S. Bach, and Luigi Boccherini. A Piano Recital by William Doppmann on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 8pm is next with music of Johann Kuhnau, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, featuring J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations, BWV 988. An Organ Recital by Dr. John Bodinger on Friday, March 16 at 8pm will feature beautiful chorale settings of Pachelbel, Homilius, and J.S. Bach with a virtuosic Max Reger finale. The Festival Finale concert on Sunday, March 18 at 3pm will be renowned cellist Zuill Bailey performing J.S. Bach's Cello Suites No.1 in G Major, BWV 1007; No. 2 in D Minor, BWV 1008; and No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1009 along with Bailey's commentary. The concerts will all be held at St. John's Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Avenue at Grand Boulevard in Spokane.

        Festival Artistic Director is Boston-based Gunther Schuller, composer, conductor and music educator, a Pulitzer Prize winner for Music and a recipient of the MacArthur Foundation's "Genius" Grant. In 2005 Schuller was named a Living Legend by the Library of Congress and was recently inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame.

        The Festival will open on Tuesday, February 28 at 8:00pm at St. John's Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Avenue at Grand Boulevard in Spokane with a Chamber Music Concert --Music of Purcell, Biber, Gabrieli, J.S. Bach and Mozart. The program includes Henry Purcell's Fantasia in C Major Upon One Note for string quintet; Mystery (or Rosary) Sonata No. 2 (The Visitation) for solo violin by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber; Andrea Gabrieli's Aria della battaglia (Battle Aria) for brass; J.S. Bach's Trio Sonata in G Major for Violin, Flute and Harpsichord, BWV 1038; an excerpt from Jean-Phillippe Rameau's opera, Acante et Céphise, arranged by Roger Désormiere, for woodwind quintet; and closes with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Oboe Quartet in F Major, K. 370. Featured will be Yuri Namkung, violin; Keith Thomas, oboe; Bruce Bodden, flute; and 20 other ensemble players. A pre-concert talk by Dr. Jane Ellsworth of Eastern Washington University will be presented at 7:30pm. General Admission tickets are $20 ($10 for students).

On Saturday, March 3 at 8:00pm at St. John's Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Avenue at Grand Boulevard in Spokane. Gunther Schuller will conduct the Bach Festival Orchestra and Chorus and vocal soloists Katherine Growdon, mezzo; Rockland Osgood, tenor; and Donald Wilkinson, baritone. The program will open with J. Christoph Bach's Ach daß ich Wasser g'nug hätte (Oh, had I but tears enough) followed by J.S. Bach's rarely performed brief Mass in G Minor, BWV 235 and concludes with Luigi Boccherini's Symphony in D Major, Op. 42, No. 26. A pre-concert talk by Dr. Jane Ellsworth is scheduled for 7:30pm. General Admission tickets are $25 ($15 for students).

William Doppmann will present a Piano Recital on Saturday, March 10 at 8:00pm at St. John's Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Avenue at Grand Boulevard in Spokane. Port Townsend, Washington based Doppmann, winner of numerous awards, performs around the world and actively pursues the dual roles of composer-pianist and records as a soloist and chamber musician. His recital program will open with Fugue in C Sharp Minor, BWV 849 from Well Tempered Clavier, Book 1, No. 4 by J. S. Bach followed by Johann Kuhnau's sonata, The Fight Between David & Goliath, followed by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Sonata in F Minor. The second part of the program will feature J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations (Aria with 30 Variations), BWV 988. A pre-concert talk by Dr. Jane Ellsworth is scheduled for 7:30pm. General Admission tickets are $20 ($10 for students)

Spokane's Dr. John Bodinger will present an Organ Recital on Friday, March 16, at 8:00pm at St. John's Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Avenue at Grand Boulevard in Spokane. Beautiful chorale settings of Pachelbel, Homilius, J.S. Bach will be featured along with a virtuosic Max Reger finale.

World renowned cellist, Zuill Bailey, will conclude the 2012 Festival with a Festival Finale recital on Sunday, March 18, at 3pm in a program of J.S. Bach's Suites for Solo Cello No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007; No. 2 in D Minor, BWV 1008; and No. 3 in C Major, BWV 1009 with commentary by Bailey. Bailey is in demand around the globe as a soloist, director of a variety of music festivals and now with extensive work as a recording artist.
General Admission tickets for the Bailey recital are $20 ($10 for students)
