BACH 2010 - The 32nd Annual Northwest Bach Festival

SPOKANE - The 32nd Annual Northwest Bach Festival presented by Connoisseur Concerts will be held in Spokane January 30 - February 14, 2010, opening with a piano recital by Christopher O'Riley, followed by a Chamber Music Concert with music of Boismortier, J.S. Bach, and Beethoven and then featuring a rare performance of J.S. Bach's masterpiece, Mass in B Minor, last performed in Spokane during the 2000 Festival. The 2010 Festival will conclude with an organ recital by Dr. John Bodinger performing music of Buxtehude, J.S. Bach, and Vierne.  Festival Artistic Director is Boston-based Gunther Schuller, composer, conductor and music educator, a Pulitzer Prize winner for Music and a recipient of the MacArthur Foundation's Genius Grant.  In 2005 Schuller was named a Living Legend by the Library of Congress and was recently inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame among his numerous awards.

The Festival will open on Saturday, January 30 at 8:00pm with a piano recital performed by Christopher O'Riley at St. John's Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Avenue at Grand Boulevard in Spokane.  Christopher O'Riley, one of the most outstanding pianists of our time, is a widely-engaged concert artist.  He is also well known as host of NPR's highly-successful weekly program, From The Top, featuring young musicians.  The Festival recital program will include pre-Bach music with a piano sonata by Johann Kuhnau, composer of the first piece titled "sonata" published in Germany, followed by four sonatas selected from over 500 sonatas composed by Domenico Scarlatti:  Kk. 132 in C Major, Kk. 141 in D Minor, Kk. 193 in E-flat Major, and Kk. 490 in D Major.  J.S. Bach is featured with his English Suite No. 6, BWV 811 followed by a post-Bach work, a piano sonata by Christian Neefe (Beethoven's teacher), and Beethoven's Grosse Fuge, Op. 134 for four hands.  The Grosse Fugue for four hands, arranged by Beethoven himself, was presumed to be lost for 115 years until discovered in 2005 in Pennsylvania.  Greg Presley will join O'Riley for the Grosse Fugue.  A pre-concert talk by Gunther Schuller will be presented at 7:30pmGeneral Admission tickets are $29 ($17 for students).

On Tuesday, February 2 at 8:00pm at St. John's Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Avenue at Grand Boulevard in Spokane, a Chamber Music Concert titled Before Bach & Beyond, A Paris to Vienna Tour with Boismortier, J.S. Bach and Beethoven.  A Joseph Boismortier work,  Concerto for Five Flutes in E Minor, Op. 15, No. 6 played by Bruce Bodden, Alaina Bercilla, Justin Bahrami, Frieda Chan and Heather Wisswell will be followed by J.S. Bach's Chaconne from Partita in D Minor for solo violin, BWV 1004 performed by Jason MoodyCellist William Conable will then present the J.S. Bach Cello Suite No. 6 in D Major, BWV 1012.  A Beethoven piece performed by Bruce Bodden, Lynne Feller Marshall and Greg Presley will conclude the program, Trio in G Major for Piano Flute and Bassoon, Op. 259A pre-concert talk by Gunther Schuller will be presented at 7:30pmGeneral Admission tickets are $25  ($15 for students).

On Friday, February 5 at 8:00pm at St. John's Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Avenue at Grand Boulevard in Spokane  Gunther Schuller will conduct  a rare performance of J. S. Bach's masterpiece, Mass In B Minor, BWV 232 with the Bach Festival Orchestra and Chorus and vocal soloists Janet Brown, soprano; Katherine Growdon, mezzo; Rockland Osgood, tenor and Donald Wilkinson, baritone.  A pre-concert talk by Dr. Jane Ellsworth of Eastern Washington University is scheduled for 7:30pm. The Mass in B Minor was last performed in Spokane at the 2000 Festival.  General Admission tickets are $29  ($17 for students).

Dr. John Bodinger of Spokane will perform an Organ Recital on Sunday, February 14 at 7:30pm at St. Augustine Church, 428 W. 19th Avenue at Bernard Street in Spokane.  A program including Dietrich Buxtehude's La Capricciosa Variations, J.S. Bach's Prelude and Fugue in E Minor, BWV 548 and Prelude and Fugue in C Major, BWV 545 followed by post-Bach works including a sampler from Vierne's organ works:  two movements from Pieces de Fantasie including the famous Carillon de Westminster and selections from his Pieces En Style LibreSuggested Donation at the door:  $10

CONNOISSEUR CONCERTS TO PRESENT TWO OUTDOOR CONCERTS,
MOZART ON A SUMMER'S EVE, TUESDAY, JULY 13, and WEDNESDAY, JULY 14, 2010, IN BEAUTIFUL MANITO PARK--LAWN EAST OF DUNCAN GARDENS

SPOKANE - Connoisseur Concerts will present the 20th annual Mozart On A Summer's Eve, two concerts in July on Tuesday, July 13 at 7:00pm with a repeat performance on Wednesday, July 14 at 7:00pm on the lawn east of Duncan Gardens in Manito Park just off Tekoa Street which runs parallel to Grand Boulevard on the east side of Manito Park. 

Connoisseur Concerts' Wind Ensemble directed by Verne Windham, Music Director of Mozart On A Summer's Eve, will perform with special guest artists to be announced. 

Tickets to the concerts will be $25 per person for table seating at white linen-covered round tables that seat eight.  The ticket price includes a gourmet dessert and coffee provided by Luna Restaurant.  Some patrons may wish to reserve a table for eight ($200) and arrange for friends and family to join them. Ticket holders are invited to arrive as early as 5:30pm to picnic or have a potluck at their reserved table. 

Tickets for lawn seating for those who bring their own blankets or chairs are $10 per person and are for the concert only with no food or beverage service.
