BACH 2009 - The 31st Annual Northwest Bach Festival
The Bach Continuum  -  Music before and beyond Bach with J.S. Bach at the center

SPOKANE - The 31st Annual Northwest Bach Festival presented by Connoisseur Concerts will be held in Spokane January 23 - 31, 2009 introducing a new six-year programming plan presented by Festival Artistic Director Gunther Schuller that expands the music of the annual Festival to include a continuum of music 150 years both before and after Johann Sebastian Bach. Boston-based Gunther Schuller, composer, conductor and music educator, is a Pulitzer Prize winner for Music and is a recipient of the MacArthur Foundation's Genius Grant.  In 2005 Schuller was named a Living Legend by the Library of Congress and was recently inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame among numerous other awards.

The Festival will open on Friday, January 23 at 8:00pm with a recital performed by Mark Kroll on both harpsichord and piano in the Marie Antoinette Room at The Davenport Hotel, 10 S. Post Street in Spokane.  The program will include pre-Bach music from Alessandro Scarlatti with Variations on "La Folia", then the music of J.S. Bach with Chromatic Fantasie & Fugue, BWV 903 and Fantasie and Fugue in C minor, BWV 906 and conclude with Piano Sonata in F# Minor by Johann Hummel.  Kroll, Visiting Professor at Northeastern University, is Professor Emeritus of Boston University where he was the long-time Chair of the Department of Historical Performance.  He is acclaimed as one of the world's leading harpsichordists and forte pianists.  A pre-concert talk by Dr. Jane Ellsworth of Eastern Washington University will be presented at 7:30pm.  General Admission tickets are $25 ($15 for students).

James David Christie of Boston, well-known guest artist with the Festival, will return to the Festival on Saturday, January 24 at 8:00pm to perform on the organ at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 428 W. 19th Avenue at Bernard in Spokane.  Christie, based in Boston, is a world-renowned performer and music scholar who is Distinguished Artist-in-Residence at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and Professor of Organ at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music as well as serving as Organist of the Boston Symphony.  Christie's recital program will include a continuum of music as prepared in Mr. Schuller's plan with focus on Heinrich Schütz, J.S. Bach's Prelude and Fugue in E Minor "Grand", BWV 548 and Fugue in B Minor on a Theme by Corelli, BWV 579 and music of Max Reger.   A pre-concert talk by Dr. Jane Ellsworth will take place at 7:30pm. Suggested donation at the door is $10.

On Tuesday, January 27 at 8:00pm at St. John's Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Avenue at Grand Boulevard in Spokane, a chamber music concert including J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major , BWV 1048 will be presented along with Jean Fery Rebel's Les Elemens (Le Cahos), Michel Corrette's Le Phenix, a J.S. Bach sonata for flute and harpsichord and J.S. Bach Trio in F Major for violin, oboe and harpsichord, BWV 1040 followed by a trio sonata by Franz Joseph Haydn.  A pre-concert talk by Gunther Schuller will be given at 7:30pm. General Admission tickets are $25 ($15 for students).

The Festival Finale concert will take place on Saturday, January 31 at 8:00pm at St. John's Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Avenue at Grand Boulevard in Spokane with Gunther Schuller conducting the Bach Festival Orchestra and Chorus and vocal soloists Janet Brown, soprano; Krista River, mezzo; Rockland Osgood, tenor and Donald Wilkinson, baritone.  The program includes three short sacred choral pieces by Heinrich Schütz, two Bach cantatas, BWV 98 and BWV 99, both titled, What God Doth, That Is Rightly Done.  The program will conclude with a performance of W.A. Mozart's Solemn Vespers (Vesperae Solemnis de confessore in C Major), K. 339.  A pre-concert talk by Gunther Schuller is scheduled for 7:30pm. General Admission tickets at $30 ($15   for students).

General Admission Series tickets are available for the 3 concerts on January 23, January 27 and January 31 for $69 (an $80 value).  Student series (no further discount) are available for $45 for the 3-concert series.  The organ recital is by donation at the door.

Free Bach Festival Educational Events will take place at Eastern Washington University in the Music Building on the Cheney campus.  These sessions are of interest to anyone who enjoys classical music.  All of the events are free and open to the public.  No advance registration is required.
